All our physiotherapists are registered with the Health Professions Council and are Members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy was initially a progression of nursing and developed from the realisation that heat, massage and exercise could help to relive general aches and pains in muscles and joints. Physiotherapy was prescriptive and very much under the control of Doctors. Over the decades Physiotherapy evolved to become the profession it is today. We still use massage and give exercises, but only after a thorough assessment to help diagnose the problem.

What can physiotherapy treat?

Chartered physiotherapists are experts in the non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, including conditions affecting joints, ligaments, nerves, muscles and tendons. Physiotherapists are also responsible for the rehabilitation of patients who have undergone orthopaedic surgery and work closely with orthopaedic consultants.

Physiotherapy is often the first port of call if you are suffering with:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Headache and migraine
  • Sports injuries
  • Work related conditions
  • Postural re-education
  • Whiplash injuries
  • Post-op rehabilitation
  • Leg and arm pain
  • Adolescent “growth” pains

We see a lot of people who are suffering with back pain, which can be extremely painful and affect everything you do. Stiff joints can also have a large impact on daily life, preventing you from activities such as gardening and playing golf. Physiotherapy can make a tremendous difference to these problems in a very short space of time.

What does physiotherapy involve?

Physiotherapists use a variety of techniques to restore normal biomechanics, improve tissue healing and reduce pain. These techniques include:

  • Biomechanical assessment and correction
  • Joint mobilisation/manipulation
  • Specific soft tissue massage/stretching
  • Electrotherapy: ultrasound and interferential therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Tailored exercise regime
  • Advice and re-education
  • Taping and kinesiotaping

Our main aim is to find out what is wrong as quickly as possible and put it right. If it is something that physiotherapy cannot treat or that needs further investigation we will work with your Doctor or Consultant to point you in the right direction for additional help.
